CHDE. Chart
To visualize what we have just said please look at the chart. You can read through the analysis of two songs made by Chair Dance Instructor – Alina Crisu. At her final working-stage, she noted all emotions, steps and interpretations on paper. She was also asked to explain how she will teach her songs.
You can see how the choreographies of Alina look like below each chapter.
Put your graffiti on me – Kat graham
- Warm-up – 7 min
- Gold – Tolan (for the first stage of warm-up, the Points)
- Sin querer Queriendo (the other two stages, Cardio and CHDE elements)
- Choreography
- 00:00-00:16
- the I’ll show first steps after the walking part (denim, jeans, jacket, pink chucks and a mini skirt)
- I’ll explain it in slow motion and I’ll repeat together with the students a couple of times without the music so they get it right because the moves are pretty fast and it’s a little bit challenging (2 min)
- I’ll repeat with them 3 more times with music (4th one without me) – 4 min
- The walking we do before she starts to sing has to be effortless, energetic, but also sensual, you can compare it with a catwalk of some models but we add a little bit of energy extra, so a combination of soldier and sexy flow. The steps follow the beats of the song
- I’ve chosen those steps to underline a little bit the lyrics but also the beats
- 00:16-00:19
- same structure, I show the next step with the music, then without music and after we repeat together a couple of times also with music then I add an extra explanation if necessary in slow motion (the transition between the last move of the first part and the beginning of this part is pretty fast, the head rotation is fast and full of energy, you’ll have to move mainly your head; for the next move what it’s important is to mark the beat and the words “first” with your head and your hands) 2-3 min
- then we repeat 1-2 times together and then 1-2 times I stop and watch the students (2-3 min)
- here we have again a sexy flow, in this part, the moves follow the melody and her voice (except the last beat “first”)
- 00:20-00:24
- I show the new steps, then repeat 2 times with me, I add the explanation below and we repeat again 2 -3 times (4th without me) on music (2-3 min)
- important here is the conversation, the first step is a direct conversation (pointing with your finger on the word “you” also eye contact is here important) and for the second move you have to be really sensual like you really want the other person to “ take advantage of you”
- as we have to conversation we follow the lyrics but we move also according the melody
- 00:25-00:29
- lyrics: “drink up this bottle of yeah and paint your body on me “
- same structure as above (I show on music, then together 2-3 times on music, after explanation of some tiny details, repeat on music 2-3 more times, without me 1-2 times) 4-5 min
- important is to mark “yeah” with the wavy move of your body and “me” with your hands so express what the lyrics say, on the word “me” you can also hear a beat that marks the word as well
- attitude: keep being provocative and playful, but at the same time showing you are in control and powerful
- after this, I’ll explain more details where they have to pay attention and let them repeat 2 more times without me (2 min)
- 00:30-00:36
- the normal structure as above (5 min)
- What I want to show is again the message of the song “ put your graffiti on me “ so you show all over your body (with your hands) again a little bit sensual even if the music is a little bit faster, show you enjoy the moment; on the words “tag me” you will have a different vibe a little bit surprised and shy but also excited and you show that you want to be “tagged”
- moves on the melody but the focus is still on the lyrics
- 00:37-00:40
- the chorus begins same structure as above with this explanation: the move of our legs is not determined by the hips but we move our knees and the movement of the hand alternates between vertically and horizontally; in the same time we rotate towards the chair so we show our back for the next step; on “tag me” you will jump and look over your shoulder and place your hands on you booty (5-6 min)
- at this part, we try to follow the line that the special pam’s create in the song, this is very energetic; the last move of this part on” tag me” has a slightly different attitude than the “tag me” from part E, here we don’t look surprised, shy anymore but you go back to the sexy look and attitude
- 00:40-00:43
- the line of the melody stays the same, and here we try to mark the beats with the movements of our hips, a little bit before the part ends we have to make a quick turn to be able to do the next step; same structure as above (5-6 min)
- Again we have this playful and joyful attitude, the part ends with a sighing sound, that we mark with a little more sexy attitude
- at this part we focus again on the beats and try to mark them right
- we will repeat till hearing 2-3 more times and we also record (3-4 min)
- 00:44 – 00:47 (from here we will probably not have time to get from the first class so it will be for the next class)
- from here all the “put your name on it” – moves to focus more on the lyrics, in this first part you want the attention on your hip (from here the move of the hip) and it’s then transitioned to your hands
- I explain the steps as I did before and here we would practice more without music ( 6-7 min)
- 00:48-00:52
- we go further with the put your name on it, moving the attention again to your booty, after that there is a special sound that insinuates a fall (the intensity of the sound drops), so that’s why in this step we go on the floor
- important: pay attention to the knees!!! I follow the teaching method (6-7 min)
- 00:53-1:00
- the following moves are really sensual and explicit according to the lyrics – part of this will be also explained to the students
- the normal teaching method is followed ( repeat 4-5 times so that the move sits in your body/ memory)
- 00:00-00:16
- Stretching 5-10 min
- Christina Aquilera -Hurt
- Britney Spears- Everytime
Billie Eilish – everything I wanted
- Warm up (7-8 min)
- Gold- Tolan ( first stage Points)
- Britney Spears – gimme more ( cardio and chde Stage)
- Choreography
- 01:06-01:10
- I show the first 3 moves on the music and without the music, then I repeat a couple of times with the students with music, I give a full explanation of the moves and repeat again 2-3 time (2-3min)
- with the first move, I want to give somehow meaning to the lyrics, so the fact that I let my hand fly away from me means that it goes away slowly just like a dream can be far away from reality, so here we underline the lyrics but somehow we want also to follow the melody that after the words seem to be absent, so I try to fill this gap with the smooth movement of my hand
- the second move follows the beats you hear on the background and then
we transition again to the lyrics with the hand moves - The vibe of the song is really smooth, deep and emotionally and it’s of course slow
- the flow is mainly a fly flow
- 01:11-01:15
- I show the next couple of moves, following the same teaching method (2-3 min)
- the head movement is really smooth following the song’s line
- this part follows the melody but also the lyrics (for example the queen drop smooth move it’s used to underline the “wake up “ line, so when you come back you mark it with your head and of course look like you’ve been woken up, the same with the next move of your hands – you show what you see);
- 01:16-01:20
- I show on the music next 3 steps, we repeat together on the music 1-2 times, I add a little explanation and then we repeat again 2-3 times (2-3min)
- this part is mostly about the conversation, you point with your finger to mark the word “you” (the move has to be again smooth not energetic); next move is an emotionally loaded move with which I want to tell is that you really want that ”you” (you are pointing to) to be here with you and that’s why you kind of deeply hug yourself, you can even close your eyes if you want to
- The move that helps you get up from the chair is a move that shows somehow you don’t control your body, what you must feel is like somebody is pushing you from behind but there is also somebody else in front of you who is pulling you so your body makes those uncontrolled wavy moves; this supports again the fly flow of the song
- 01:21-01:24
- I show the next steps and follow the teaching method (2-3 min)
- this is the chorus and I implemented some ballet moves in it, as we hear there is a change in the intensity of the sound and also in the rhythm, so the steps in this part are a little bit faster and follow the melody; the next move that marks the word “here” has to be slow and prolonged in the same way she sings this part, so here we transition from following the melody to following her voice
- 01:25-01:28
- I show the next steps, following the teaching method and I also give more details about how to perform better the already learned steps then we repeat together on the music and I let them dance a couple of times without me ( 2-3 min)
- We have again a transition from following her voice to the beats, but at this part, we follow as well the lyrics (especially on the word “hurt”, we explicit mark it with our move) after she stops singing there is a moment when you barely hear anything but there are some beats we mark with a movement that shows somehow we are hurt or we suffer (so the moves are a little bit tense and controlled)
- 01:29-01:32
- I introduce the next 2 steps of the chorus, then we repeat following the teaching method ( 2-3 min)
- The focus goes again on the lyrics, we make a smooth and small turn so we can come closer to the chair for the next step, where we will slowly sit on the chair when she sings “don’t wanna lie “ and on the word ”here” we will again follow her voice with a prolonged move of our legs.
- 01:33-01:39
- we go further with 3 new steps (3-4 min)
- this part it is more of a transition part to be able to be get up from the chair and prepare for the next move; so the first step hits a beat you hear in the background (it’s not very obvious) , but after this, the next moves are just following the melody
- after this, I’ll explain more tiny details, mostly about the feeling of some
- moves; I’ll let the students repeat 2-3 more times without me and paying attention to the new details ( 2-3 min)
- 01:40-01:44
- I’ll introduce 2 more steps and then repeat a couple of times (4-5 min)
- here I chose again steps that can mark her singing and voice (so prolonged and smooth moves) and with those moves you should be able to keep yourself in the story
- 01:45- 01:48
- We’ll go further with one more step (4-5 min)
- here I focus back on the lyrics but it’s still a combination between the lyrics and the melody; so I truly mark the word “yourself” with the movement I choose; during this part you should feel a little bit sad and desperate but also confused – you don’t understand why you are in that situation when you don’t recognize yourself
- after this part I won’t probably have too much time so I’ll stop here (if I have enough time I’ll go further) we will’ repeat a couple of times together, I’ll let the students dance without me another 2-3 times and we will also film (4-5 min)
- 01:49-01:53
- another 3 steps are added and we repeat 4-5 times (4-5 min)
- the change of rhythm and melody is marked again by the moves and we also underline her voice on the words “ why “ and “hear” (the prolonged moves) we also try to express what the lyrics say
- 01:53-01:58
- I show last part of the choreography then we repeat several times to get it right (5-6 min)
- the last part is about conversation and also performing the lyrics, we focus more on the lyrics, but we will also catch some of the beats
- 01:06-01:10
- Stretching ( 5-10 min)
- Wicked Games
- Insatiable
